Flake, who was a major critic of President Trump during his campaign, privately wrote an ideological book about the conservative movement as he runs for reelection in the 2018 midterms.

In his book, Flake reportedly describes his own take on what government should look like as competing with a different conservative agenda that is both nationalist and populist, according to the Times. The senator favors policies surrounding small government and supports free trade and immigration reform.

The book is also reportedly an attempt to differentiate himself from Trump, whom Flake refused to support during the 2016 presidential race.

The senator — who is being targeted by the Trump administration during his upcoming primary run — wrote the book in private and didn’t tell his own political advisers about the project. He reportedly began telling political allies about the book over the past few days.

Members of the Trump administration, including the president, have been meeting with potential GOP primary opponents for Flake. Trump also reportedly considered spending $10 million to try to defeat Flake.
