GOP senator warns White House not to fire Mueller

A top GOP senator has warned the White House not to fire special counsel Robert Mueller over his mushrooming probe of Russian meddling in the election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

“There is no possible way anybody at the White House could be seriously thinking about firing Mueller,” said Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, a staunch supporter of President Trump.

“I don’t even want to comment on that, because that’s so far out of bounds it couldn’t possibly be a serious discussion.”

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said again on Friday that while the president has the power to fire Mueller, he has no intention of doing so at this time.

Mueller, meanwhile, has asked the White House to preserve all documents related to the meeting that Donald Trump Jr., Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and former campaign manager Paul Manafort had with a Russian lawyer, it was reported Friday.

Mueller sent what is called “a document preservation request,” asking that Team Trump save “any subjects discussed in the course of the June 2016 meeting” and also “any decisions made regarding the recent disclosures about the June 2016 meeting,” CNN reported.

Trump Jr. arranged the sit-down after Natalia Veselnitskaya approached him through an intermediary offering dirt on Hillary Clinton that came from the Russian government.

Also Friday, Reuters reported that Veselnitskaya represented Russia’s top spy agency, the Federal Security Service, in a land dispute in Moscow.

The FSB, successor to the Soviet-era KGB service, was headed by Vladimir Putin before he became Russia’s president.

Veselnitskaya insists that she is a private lawyer and has never obtained damaging information about Clinton.

Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Kremlin, has said she had “nothing whatsoever to do with us.”
