Trump departs N.J. for brief visit to White House to talk trade

TRENTON — President Donald Trump will interrupt his working vacation at his New Jersey golf club to meet Monday with his economic advisers in Washington, D.C. before returning to Trump Tower in New York in the evening, according to the White House.

Trump is scheduled to spend the day sitting down with his new chief of staff, John Kelly, signing a memorandum on trade with China and meeting with the National Economic Council.

The president has been spending August at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster while the West Wing undergoes major renovations.

He returns to Washington briefly after a weekend of turmoil sparked by a white supremacist demonstration in Charlottesville, Virg., where one woman was killed and many others injured when a man connected to white nationalist groups drove a car into a crowd of counter protestors.

Trump drew heated criticism from the left and from members of his own party, who said he failed to explicitly condemn the hate groups involved, decrying extremism “on many sides.” The White House later attempted to clarify Trump’s remarks. The Department of Justice has opened a civil rights investigation into the weekend’s event.

On Monday, the president appeared to be turning his attention to trade, announcing his trip to Washington and blaming Democrats for “some of the worst trade deals” in history.

According to his public schedule, Trump will depart Washington later this evening and head for Trump Tower in New York, where he has a scheduled phone call with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan.

He is expected to continue using Bedminster as a base of operations until Aug. 21.
