House Oversight Committee chairman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, wants the person who leaked information about President Trump’s Oval Office meeting with top Russian diplomats to be jailed.
“I want to see that this person is prosecuted. I think the president makes a very good point. No matter who is in the White House, you cannot have the type of leaking of information, sources, methods, classified information,” Chaffetz told ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday.
“I don’t care who it is — Democrat or Republican — you cannot have that happen. So, not only do you need to wall them off, you probably ought to put handcuffs on them and put them in jail,” he said.
Several details from Trump’s meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Sergei Kislyak in the Oval Office have leaked to the press.
Trump admitted to sharing “facts pertaining to terrorism and airline flight safety” with Russia after the Washington Post reported Trump disclosed intelligence that had been provided by a U.S. ally on the condition that it not be shared.
The New York Times reported last week that Trump told the Russian officials that former FBI Director James Comey is “a nut job.”
“I just fired the head of the FBI He was crazy, a real nut job,” Trump said.
Chaffetz said Sunday that he doesn’t know “if that was said or not said.”
